Description
Seeded native meadows can be a unique amenity in residential landscapes, offering compelling visual, ecological, and functional benefits. Among these, their ability to slow runoff, increase infiltration, and filter pollutants makes them powerful tools for protecting and improving water quality. Successfully establishing seeded meadows, however, involves processes and timelines that, if not executed properly, can lead to weedy, underperforming plantings, failure to achieve design intent, and frustrated clients. Hear how Campion Hruby, an award-winning landscape architecture firm specializing in residential design across scales, incorporates native meadows into their projects, how they sell these habitats to clients, and how they integrate seeded landscapes gracefully with garden plantings and built features. To support their work, Campion Hruby frequently collaborates with LWLA, a specialist in native meadow design, establishment, and management. Learn from LWLA what information the client needs to understand, how meadow establishment interfaces with other aspects of landscape construction, and common mistakes to avoid. Case studies from this collaboration will be shown and feature projects throughout the mid-Atlantic that include a range of site conditions, design solutions, and meadow establishment methods. As these two firms can show, while creating successful native meadows takes time, the effort is well worth it, resulting in high performing, engaging landscapes that provide key habitat, enhance water quality, and offer significant enjoyment.
