Description
This three-hour course will cover the design of and materials used in the construction of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls. It will examine geosynthetics, wall properties, code requirements, equations and calculations, and case histories of MSE failures that highlight what not to do.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcome 1:
Learners will be able identify and describe the materials that are used in the construction of a MSE wall, which include geosynthetics.

Learning Outcome 2:
Learners will be able identify applicable design code requirements for an MSE wall and discuss different blocks, reinforcement, and their interaction.

Learning Outcome 3:
Learners will be able to describe how MSE walls interact with other site features such as buildings and utilities.

Learning Outcome 4:
Learners will be able to utilize equations and calculations to determine and understand the internal stability of an MSE wall.
