Reshaping Stormwater Capture for Urban Areas

Description
This course will review research, basic applications, notable projects and stormwater mitigation potential for stacked drainage cells, with a focus on the ultra-urban environment.

New innovations in stormwater chambers allow us to manage stormwater in spaces that were never possible before. This new class of stacked drainage cells allows for a shallow profile; this allows us to keep water at higher project elevations and facilitate its reuse for irrigation, flow attenuation, and volume reduction while complying with federal, state and local regulations for stormwater detention and retention. According to recent research, the modular flexibility of these systems allows for smaller dedicated stormwater assets, which frees real estate for other programming. For example, in the State of California, bioretention basins used in tandem with shallow stormwater storage solutions can be reduced in size by 30% and can assist in creating walkable, complete streets in downtown communities with minimal space for traditional stormwater control measures. This helps alleviate some of our most pressing urban ecological challenges – including air and water quality, rising temperatures, and flooding and erosion from daily rainfall events.
