Description
This session examines the transformation of a former brownfield into a thriving mixed-use community, highlighting the critical role of landscape architecture in addressing environmental, political, and design challenges. Participants will explore site remediation and mitigation techniques that ensure safety and sustainability, as well as the complex planning strategies required to balance residential, commercial, and recreational functions amid shifting conditions. The presentation will demonstrate how integrated urban design and landscape strategies can turn environmental liabilities into valuable community assets, creating an amenity-rich, resilient, and economically viable destination.

Learning Outcomes
1. Understanding Site Remediation and Mitigation efforts associated with this Brownfield site: participants will be able to identify environmental hazards associated with former landfills (methane gas mitigation, unsuitable soils, etc) and evaluate remediation strategies (clay capping, methane venting, soil stabilization) that make the redevelopment safe and sustainable.
2. Understanding the Complex Planning strategies that balance mixed-use function of residential, commercial, and recreational – while navigating the political concerns, changing market conditions, and unique constraints associated with brownfield redevelopment
3. Participants will be able to demonstrate how thoughtful urban design, site specific landscape strategies, and integration of the landscape with architecture can transform a remediated brownfield into a vibrant amenity rich mixed-use destination.
4. Participants will be able to identify design and planning strategies that transform environmental liabilities into community asses, integrating infrastructure, public space, and economic development opportunities into the site plan.
