Description
This two-hour course explains the consequences of light pollution, identifies the design issues with typical existing outdoor lighting, and provides design strategies and case study analyses of responsible outdoor lighting and community ordinances.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcome 1:
Learners will be able to identify the sources and causes of light pollution and explain the negative effects of artificial light at night.
Learning Outcome 2:
Learners will be able to examine typical existing outdoor lighting and identify common issues such as overlighting, light trespass, wasted energy, and the negative effects on the environment (plants, animals, birds, pollinators).
Learning Outcome 3:
Learners will be able to utilize responsible outdoor lighting that is useful, targeted, controlled, and limited with the purpose of providing adequate visibility to users.
Learning Outcome 4:
Learners will be able to analyze examples of community outdoor lighting ordinances and implementation, specifically in Tuscon, AZ, and Fort Collins, CO.
