Description
This course examines the design, construction and maintenance of pavements. Specifically, the course discusses the principles (goals, terminology, economics) of pavement design before closely examining preparations and designs for flexible and rigid pavements. Then, maintenance and rehabilitation strategies are discussed before an analysis of the design of specific elements.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcome 1:
Learners will be able to identify the goals (smooth, stable, long-lasting) and terminology of pavement design, consult relevant guidelines and standards, and perform a life cycle analysis.

Learning Outcome 2:
Learners will be able to assist with geotechnical investigations, characterize materials, prepare and overlay existing pavements and explore mixture design and pavement mechanistic-empirical design (PMED).

Learning Outcome 3:
Learners will be able to make soil support and subsurface preparations for rigid pavement, explore mixture content and pavement thickness, and analyze joint design.

Learning Outcome 4:
Learners will be able to utilize non-destructive testing, perform pavement condition surveys, identify types of distresses and adopt preservation techniques and rehabilitation practices.
