Description
The study and preservation of the iconic monarch butterfly is a focal area for the conservation and research team at Mt. Cuba. Join Ellen Lake, director of conservation and research, and Sam Hoadley, manager of horticultural research, who will introduce the monarch’s biology and interactions with milkweed and discuss the fascinating nature of their migration. Students will take a tour of the newly planted milkweed trial and compare several milkweed species.

Learning Outcomes
Students will learn the life cycle of Monarch butterflies and the correlated importance of planting their host plant, milkweed, to aid in their survival.

Students will discover several species and varieties of Asclepias; see how they differ in attributes such as soil tolerance, habit, bloom time, flower color; and learn how to grow them.

Students will view different milkweed and associated plants that create a butterfly friendly garden.
