Description
Untermyer Gardens, located just north of New York City in Yonkers, NY, along the Hudson River, is a classical garden created in 1917 by Samuel and Minnie Untermyer, as part of a 150-acre estate “Greystone.” The current 43-acre public garden is composed of classical gardens situated on a steep bank overlooking the Hudson River. The principal garden is the Walled Garden, inspired by Indo-Persian gardens, with its centerpiece a pair of Ionic columns with opposing sphinxes. The Vista staircase towards the Hudson looks to the Villa d’Este staircase as precedent. The design of the gardens is by the École des Beaux-Arts-trained architect and landscape designer William W. Bosworth, who also contributed to the architecture and gardens of John D. Rockefeller’s nearby estate of Kykuit.
The course will begin with an online presentation the evening preceding the in-person field drawing program. The presentation will introduce the history of measured drawings and include discussion of methodologies for the study of buildings and gardens, as well as the adaption of precedents. The next day on-site at Untermyer Gardens, instructors will provide basic demonstrations and offer insight while participants draw. The course will conclude with a review of sketchbooks and a final discussion.
