Description
This three-hour course focuses on the science and importance of the soil food web, how to test and assess soil, and how to strengthen the soil food web. Specifically, the course will explain the characteristics and role of soils, the importance of soil health and the role of soil organisms. The course provides specific strategies for strengthening the soil food web, sustainable landscaping techniques, and a review of best practices.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcome 1:
Learners will be able to identify the characteristics of healthy soils, describe the role of soils in a functioning ecosystem, and explain the importance of soil health for sustainable landscapes.
Learning Outcome 2:
Learners will be able to identify the functions and components of the soil food web, discuss soil organisms and their interactions and relationships within the soil food web.
Learning Outcome 3:
Learners will be able to utilize techniques for assessing soil health based on physical, chemical and biological indicators and explain the importance of soil testing and assessment.
Learning Outcome 4:
Learners will be able to strengthen the soil food web through various strategies such as adding certain organic matter, reducing compaction and minimizing tillage.
