Description
Landscape architecture has seen a transformation of its design processes over time. One of the most fundamental shifts in practice has been the evolution of the methods through which designers express and visualize their ideas. Historically, hand drawing dominated the field, serving as both a creative and technical tool. In recent decades, however, the rise of digital technologies—particularly virtual reality (VR)—has radically altered landscape architectural design and presentation. While these technological advances have redefined visualization techniques, hand drawing has an interesting role in these new methods. The ongoing evolution of drawing with digital visualization tools such as VR reflects a broader shift in the landscape architectural field, characterized by a merging of traditional craft and contemporary technology.
This session will present methods for using immersive, interactive sketch tools in virtual environments to conceptualize landscape design in full 3D. Commonly used in industries like product design, automotive, and entertainment for prototyping ideas, immersive sketch VR technology has significant potential for the practice of landscape architecture. While traditional drawing offers an invaluable skill for understanding and representing space, VR sketching tools transform drawing into an interactive, immersive experience. Moreover, VR technologies benefit both the designer and the client mentally. What researchers call psychological presence, a fundamental characteristic of VR, allows users to feel safe, creative, and focused.
Drawing in virtual reality is an exciting and transformative creative medium that provides roles for immersive experiences, dynamic visualizations, shared collaborations, and enhanced opportunities for discovery.
