Learning Outcomes
Describe synthetic grass and its advantages over natural grass and other surfacing options in terms of decreased maintenance, and increased durability, versatility, sustainability, and aesthetics.
Recall how blade construction and backing design, and the use of an appropriate base (including a grid and flushing system when installed over a solid surface) facilitate drainage of urine and water, fostering a nontoxic, clean and dry, slip-resistant cushioned surface, comfortable for dog paws and humans.
Specify a dog-specific synthetic grass system appropriate for the surface material, and installed with the drainage required to ensure the efficient passage of surface fluids to maintain a dry, sanitary surface.
Explain how maintenance protocols, including removing debris and waste, applying a bacterial enzyme, and rinsing the synthetic grass, reduce exposure to contaminants and create a safe and more hygienic environment for dogs, their owners, and facility staff.
