Description
This course examines the science and techniques for promoting tree health and longevity through a focus on understanding soil conditions and improvements, establishing and maintaining root health, adopting strategies for training young trees, maintaining branch structure, utilizing pruning strategies and techniques, and planning and selecting trees based on site conditions.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcome 1:
Learners will be able to explain how soil compaction affects tree health and identify strategies to avoid damaging soils.
Learning Outcome 2:
Learners will be able to determine appropriate pruning actions, including when to cut and when not to cut, and correct defective or poor structure.
Learning Outcome 3:
Learners will be able to will be able to discuss tree biology, including their processes, health, and responses to external stimuli, to understand why trees do what they do.
Learning Outcome 4:
Learners will be able to identify proper and improper branch structure, understand the potential future risks, and train young trees through thigmomorphogenesis (altering the growth pattern).
Learning Outcome 5:
Learners will be able to adopt pruning standards, discuss structural pruning, and utilize strategies to help trees recover from cuts.
