Welcome to this course on managing time for construction projects. The schedule plays a central role in construction project management. Developing an initial schedule is a powerful tool that you can use in managing various aspects of a project, including time, resources, production, and cost. As the project progresses and the project management team recognizes more of the details that affect the construction process, the schedule will be modified to evolve with the project.
This course concentrates on using the schedule to manage the time required to execute the construction processes. It begins by considering the project as a whole, determining how to shorten the overall project schedule, and looking at the cost trade-offs of expediting the project. It then focuses on current or upcoming parts of the project with the objective of managing the project components more effectively.
Throughout this course we will be using a heavy civil project that involves the construction of a highway bridge. The highway bridge is a single-span vehicular bridge that will cross a small ravine. The bridge is of a deck-girder type and is of composite steel-concrete construction. For the purpose of discussion there will be figure and chart examples used in parts of this course.
