Description
This four-hour course will explain the temporary and permanent impacts of water on design, including saturation, rapid drawdown and groundwater, and focus on the design considerations, material selection, and construction of different types of walls, such as cast-in-place and modular block (MSE) walls.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcome 1:
Learners will be able to identify the roles and responsibilities of the site designer and the wall designer, recognize when to use a wall vs. a berm/slope, and understand how to use a berm/slope in conjunction with a wall.

Learning Outcome 2:
Learners will be able to analyze cast-in-place concrete walls, their materials and associated costs, and consider the advantages and disadvantages for specific applications.

Learning Outcome 3:
Learners will be able to analyze modular block (MSE) retaining walls, their materials and associated costs, and consider the advantages and disadvantages for specific applications.

Learning Outcome 4:
Learners will be able to discuss groundwater considerations and the temporary and permanent effects of water on design, such as saturation and rapid drawdown.
