WEDG Professionals Course - February 2025

Registration Eligibility
Familiarity with waterfront design and project development suggested.
Start Date
02/19/2025
End Date
02/20/2025
Description
Two virtual sessions: 2/19/2024, 1pm-5:00pm and 2/20/2025, 1pm-5:00pm. After completing this two-day online, virtual course, WEDG Professionals will be better prepared to respond to the challenges of designing and building in the face of climate change and to provide leadership in shaping our coasts for generations to come. Developed by a cross-cutting field of experts convened by the Waterfront Alliance, WEDG provides guidance amid a complex regulatory environment and the threats of climate change and coastal storms, and is part of the Waterfront Alliance's broader strategy and campaign to adapt our region to climate change (visit rise2resilience.org for more information). WEDG Professionals is a platform for participants to learn from innovators in the fields of waterfront planning, design, engineering, community development, maritime, and finance/risk, about designing for a resilient 2050+. The online course, given in two sessions over two days, will illustrate WEDG best practices through a series of national case studies. These case studies will highlight pioneering strategies for mitigating future climate risks through the lens of the WEDG standard, which won the 2019 American Planning Association Gold National Achievement Award for Best Practice. Participants who successfully complete both sessions and earn a 70% or higher on a 50 question online exam will receive WEDG Associate credentials, which are valid until credentialing requirements are updated. The course agenda includes: - Site Assessment and Planning - Climate and Hazard Resilience - Community Access and Connections - Edge Composition - Natural Resources and Sustainability - Innovation - WEDG Policy and Finance - WEDG Verification and Review - 5 Case Studies from Projects across the Country

Learning Outcomes
Each of the panels in the WEDG training are case studies, which illustrate WEDG best practices and technical design strategies for resilient, sustainable, and equitable waterfront projects.

Learning outcomes by panel include:

-Understanding of best practices for equitable community engagement in the waterfront design process, including active anti-displacement and anti-racist strategies for developers and designers to implement at the project level.

-Gain methods for calculating future coastal climate risks (i.e. design flood elevation which accounts for sea level rise) and apply those to assess and manage sitewide vulnerabilities to flooding and surge

-Apply community engagement principles to the design of waterfront public access space and gain shoreline engineering and design strategies for creating safe, direct water access for people and educational programming.

-Understand methods for stabilizing the shoreline edge while enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services, and manage success of ecologically-enhanced solutions through monitoring and restoration.

-Learn how to manage stormwater and account for climate change impacts through natural resources management, shoreline restoration, and brownfield remediation.

-Gain best practices for designing for human health and wellness through the emerging field of biophilic design, as well as innovative financing strategies for resilience.
Instructors
There are a total of ten instructors for this course, who will each lead a specialized portion of the content. They are mid-career or senior industry leaders who specialize in various aspects of resilient, ecological, or accessible waterfront design.
