Land development codes change over time. Civil engineering and spatial parameters often take precedence over landscape design in development codes. New applications of smart codes, form based codes and waterwise design techniques have lead governmental agencies to a renewed focus on landscape design. Florida is leading the way in smart code application and waterwise design, the role of the landscape architect in preparation of new land development codes is even more critical now as planners tackle issues of open space definitions, water conservation, streetscapes and planting requirements.
