Description
The practice of sketching for landscape design has become less common with the rise of automated drafting systems. Still, traditional sketch techniques remain one of the most effective tools designers can use to effect comprehensive solutions to sensitive design on a site.

1 day intensive workshop focuses on reintroducing traditional sketching for site analysis and design. Designed for landscape architects, architects, planners, and designers, the class is a mix of demonstration, lecture, and observational learning. The class’s simulation format and demonstrations help all levels of experience gain insight on how to use sketches for analysis and design of complex site and regional design problems.

During the workshop, participants will learn the elements of traditional sketching in the design process, how to focus these elements to bring about design resolution, how to sketch with speed and accuracy, and how to edit sketches manually and digitally for presentation. Participants will also learn, how to effectively sketch concept alternates and techniques to enhance sketches with digital painting software.

The class includes hands- on experience in the tools and techniques of the trade with an on-site
visit to practice what was learned in the morning session.

Learning Outcomes
This one-day workshop is intended to provide the participant with a working knowledge of the techniques commonly used in traditional sketch design for effective site analysis, site design, and community design in the field. The program starts by familiarizing attendees with the tools and methods used in the practice, followed by a field session to apply what was learned. The focus will be on the execution of effective design sketches to clearly convey design solutions to both private and public audiences.

Participants will gain an understanding of the value of the traditional sketch design process in site analysis and design (circulation, drainage, environmental and cultural analysis, etc.). They also gain insight into the impact of this design approach on zoning and community development. Through a combination of discussion and practical exercises, attendees can expect:

To have gained a clearer understanding of when and how to use field sketches for analysis of environmental and cultural conditions and create design alternatives for approval and refinement.

To develop the basic tools and techniques to sketch design solutions in watercolor.

To be able to describe through sketches, a comprehensive design approach and solution.

Participants will enjoy completing the course with critiques of participant sketches by the instructor and peer group. This course includes Salient Groups’ booklet outlining how to use traditional sketch techniques in landscape planning, analysis, and design.
