Description
In this slide lecture, Dr. Peter Del Tredici explores the ecology and function of woody plant root systems as well as their diverse morphology. The fact that roots occur below ground means that people often make mistaken assumptions about their behavior. Understanding the reality of what is actually going on under ground will not only help people take better care of trees, but also enhance their appreciation of how forests work. The lecture will also cover the pros and cons of the various methods of "packaging" root systems used by commercial nurseries and the root pruning techniques for encouraging a successful transition into the real world. The final portion of the lecture will examine the essential contributions that symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi make in promoting the growth and survival of trees by facilitating nutrient cycling and connectivity with neighboring species.
