Description
“You want to do good stuff on multiple levels.” That quote by Bill Allis, co-founder
with his wife Jane of The Bower, describes their vision perfectly. The quote’s simplicity
does not describe, however, the level of planning, artistry, and craftsmanship that
allowed this multifaceted, 36-acre, organic public garden to jell.
Philadelphia gallerist and art consultant Bridgette Mayer was enlisted to guide a Call
to Art from 130 international applicants. Landscape Architects Oehme, Van Sweden
(OvS) created a master plan, and Larry Weaner Landscape Associates (LWLA) designed
various native plantings, and advised on stewardship of the wild areas. Bill and Jane
served as project managers and guiding force. On our tour, instructors will describe
how each area was designed, planted, and managed; how each space fits spatially
and programmatically with the larger landscape; and how design, art, and ecology
can even more creatively interact going forward.
