Description
Today in this presentation, you will notice there is a lot of historical information reaching far back. So I am really going to tell you a story and try to make this as entertaining as possible. I want to tell you the story of how we got to where we are now with our consideration of the environment in our codes of ethics. You will see a lot of information about how we have sort of changed our mindset and changed our approaches to things on how we build and construct over the centuries here in the U.S. Really, if you start looking at that history, you will understand why now we have these wonderful codes. At the end of the course I do want to show you some of the more mainstream professional organizations and how they are approaching really adopting these environmental principles within their codes. Then of course we are going to talk throughout the course about ethics, so we do have to talk about the nuts and bolts of ethics and workplace ethics and what that really means, how that is defined. And then finally I am going to give you a couple of case studies on some situations, one of which was very close to where I live that just happened this year that I am following very closely on how we can really adopt these ethics that are in our codes and really ring true and help uphold them.
As we go forward let’s talk a little bit about the course itself. I really want you to walk away from this course not just knowing about that you need to make smart choices for the sake of the environment, but also to have a really deep understanding on what it means to have the environment into those codes of ethics that we have in planning, design and construction.

• Recognize the need for sustainable approaches imbedded in Codes of Ethics for professional organizations within the planning, design, and construction industry
• Explain the importance of a green ethical approach to the planning, design, and construction process which seeks to avoid depletion of energy, water, and raw material resources for future generations
• Develop ethical reasoning to aid professionals to navigate through difficult decisions in order to create environments that are livable and promote health, safety and well-being
• Practice an integrative approach to sustainable practices that seeks to prevent environmental degradation caused by facility and infrastructure developments during their implementation and over their life cycle
