Description
Industrial stormwater characteristics are as varied as the industrial processes themselves in part because those
with significant outdoor activities such as salvage yards and mining and landfills in fact originate from the industrial
processes.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued permitting regulations under the National Pollutant
Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) to control stormwater discharges associated with eleven industrial
categories. NPDES permitting authorities, either EPA or a state environmental agency, issue stormwater permits to
control runoff under one of the following categories: 1) Construction General Stormwater Permits (CGP), 2) Multi-
Sector Stormwater Permits (MSGP), 3) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) and 4) Individual
Stormwater Permits.
The paper will investigate the permitting and monitoring requirements for industrial stormwater and evaluate
associated treatment processes including conventional floc and drop treatment , up-flow filters, engineered media
filters, vortex separation, ribbon membrane filters, off-line treatment, chemical treatment and split flow treatment
systems.
