This presentation will outline the Tool for Observing Play Outdoors (TOPO), a new typology of outdoor play and systematic field observation protocol which can be used to effectively depict children’s behaviors in outdoor playspaces, as well as evaluate the play environment itself. The tool can be deployed in either a collapsed or expanded form to serve the needs of a wide range of studies and environments.

1- Explain the unique play opportunities afforded by outdoor environments 2- Describe the rationale for the development of the new TOPO typology and tool for capturing outdoor play 3- Distinguish between the different categories of outdoor play to capture play behaviors or evaluate play environments 4- Apply or utilize the TOPO tool to capture and analyze children's outdoor play behaviors and/or environments
