Description
Coastal landscapes are highly valued for residential and commercial uses, but also provide a variety of public services including flood mitigation, erosion protection, wildlife habitat, public recreation space and even carbon capture. In order to maximize these public services, we need to protect and restore these landscapes by minimizing hardscaping, employing nature-based designs, and encouraging the use of native species. Living shorelines are a method of protecting the shoreline with native plants and natural materials, as an alternative to engineered armoring. This session will discuss some advantages of using living shorelines and nature-based methods, show lots of examples, and review resources for learning more. We will also cover the coastal blue carbon: how coastal ecosystems trap atmospheric carbon and store it in plant tissues and soils. Preserving coastal wetlands, allowing tidal flow, and restoring native flora will help maximize the carbon capture potential of coastal ecosystems.
