Description
This session will be a discussion of emerging trends in mobility and the design process as the vision, mission, and function of urban greenways continues to evolve. Trails function as more than just a place to recreate or passively engage with nature - they now serve as critical pieces of a comprehensive transportation network that grant users access to a wide variety of goods, services, and opportunities without needing a vehicle. This presentation will discuss the recent shift away from recreational trail use to a focus on connectivity, as well as new mobility trends including the blurring of lines between private and public transport, accommodations for electric vehicles and scooters, and trail-oriented economic development. The session will include real-world trail examples in various stages of design and implementation including, but not limited to, the Wolf River Greenway in Memphis, the Atlanta BeltLine, the CV Link in Coachella Valley, the Razorback Regional Greenway in Northwest Arkansas, and the Cross Charlotte Trail. The process of working collaboratively with communities and neighborhood stakeholders will also be discussed, with a focus on strategies to achieve inclusivity before, during, and after the charrette.
