Description
Hired on the spot in 2012, Allworth Design was tasked with creating a design to bring cohesion, functionality, and beauty to five adjoining properties on the Mercer Island shoreline in Washington. The original house, designed by Jim Olson of Olson Kundig Architects, was remodeled by Susan Desko Architects, and new structures were added, including sports-car and entertainment pavilions. The landscape, which accommodates functions for social gatherings, large and small, includes an upper pavilion and great lawn that serve as gathering space, in addition to an outdoor fireplace, beach fire pit, boccie court, water features, a hot tub, cold plunge pool, and the owner’s sculpture collection installed throughout the property.
This three-acre property features extensive landscape plantings, including the introduction of mature tree specimens, specifically evergreen magnolia, excelsa cedar, kousa dogwood, ginkgo, and Japanese black pine. Large existing Japanese maples were transplanted to new locations throughout the property, and lower plantings were used in drifts and masses to achieve painterly affects. Project installation occurred over a period of four years.
This Garden Dialogue will be led by Randy Allworth and Brian Gregory, the project's landscape architect.
