Description
Conventionally, solar study is used to visualize the sun path and shadows that a site or building element generates during a specific time. It becomes challenging to distill shadow when those elements overlap and grow to be more complex. This course presents techniques to capture shadows projected on the ground by removing noise of contexts and introduces simple animation methods to represent shadow changes over time. It also discusses potential use of the shadow study in site/planting design to provide much-needed shade in public areas.

Learning tools to create and analyze shadows generated by architecture and site features are critical to improve people’s physical experience of space. During the design processes, knowing areas that receive excessive solar exposure will suggest shading canopies or appropriate planting species to provide comfort. Knowing areas that are over-shadowed will prompt consideration of strategies to reduce safety hazards. This course will focus on the use of solar study in site design and discusses means to produce and map shade throughout time.
