Completing Streets for Better Communities

Start Date

Description
The course is designed to educate the attendee on why the street is an important part of our social and transportation structures. It discusses how “complete” streets design can improve quality of life. In the introduction, the presentation defines the “street” and “complete street”. It is important to understand how and why the street evolved over time; therefore, the presentation includes a historical comparison of differing sides in relation to design and usages of the “street”. It defines and explains the goals and objectives of the Federal Transportation Bill so the attendees can fully understand the forces directing design of the “street”. Street design has multiple impacts on environmental and human health. The presentation will outline four specific circumstances where the “street” can have environmental and human health impacts: urban areas with low poverty, urban areas with high poverty, rural areas with low poverty, and rural areas with high poverty. Complete streets can have a profound impact on both the environment and our human health. In discussion of the impacts seen on these communities, the presentation will evaluate whether a complete street may improve the quality of life over traditional street design. The presentation then offers methods landscape architects can employ to design and implement complete streets and to improve older, more traditionally designed streets. Lastly, the presentation will walk through the Vision Zero plan and discuss the pros/cons and implications of the Vision Zero goals. It will conclude with some time for Q&A at the end.
