Adopting a ‘More than Less Bad’ Paradigm at South Coast Botanic Garden

Start Date
06/18/2019
End Date
06/21/2019
Description
The presentation will discuss a project at South Coast Botanic Garden in Southern California, where the initial desire to restore and renovate the beloved Lake and Creek has inspired more impactful conversations and decisions around regenerative practices. Located on a former landfill, South Coast Botanic Garden has its roots in advocating for excellence in land reclamation and sustainability, striving to serve as a model for others to aspire to. The session will highlight the process the Garden undertook to move from a ‘do less bad’ sustainable model to one that employed a regenerative and systematic paradigm and approach for the design of the Creek Garden and Lake in order to holistically manage large amounts of off-site stormwater, conserve water through rainwater harvesting, restore habitat, and create a fantastic place while showcasing these values through garden design and education.

Learning Outcomes
This session will have the following learning objectives: 1) The presentation will illustrate a method for utilizing the Seven Principles of Regeneration such as seeing wholes rather than parts or potentials instead of problems, to help holistically plan and design a garden. Public Gardens can become advocates for going beyond sustainability and act as examples for approaching these issues through planning and design through a regenerative practice lens. 2) The session covers South Coast Botanic Garden’s recent efforts to implement its Vision Plan. A discussion on how the principles were applied as a methodology for analysis and design will follow, concluded with a question and answer session. The presentation will use this case study project to encourage participants to consider the role of Public Gardens as a model for regenerative practices that go beyond status quo sustainability practices that are ‘less bad’. 3) The session will also cover how design consultants developed design-based solutions to meet the gardens diverse objectives.
