Description

In this course, attendees will be taken through the specifications of the synthetic turf system at Hilton Head Park at San Diego Parks and Recreation including the base construction, the shock absorption pad properties, the turf infill used, types of turf fiber used and how those different system components work together. The coated sand turf infill used at Franklin and Marshall College is an alternative to the crumb rubber and raw sand mixture typically used in specifying and designing sports fields. This presentation will go in depth with the properties of this type of infill including characteristics and considerations when designing or installing a turf field. In addition to the in-depth analysis of coated sand infill, the presenter will cover each infill category with their characteristics and considerations for the attendees.

Learning Outcomes

• Ability to identify and name the different synthetic turf infill categories along with their characteristics.
• Develop an understanding of the considerations of turf infill during field design and planning
• Learn the components that make up a synthetic turf specification
• Analyze the needs and requirements of synthetic turf clients and make a recommendation for a certain type of turf infill based on those needs.
• Collaborate with other landscape architects and field designers to understand what solutions best fit certain client considerations depending on geography, project type/size and other variables.
• Ability to vet and select the appropriate infill relative to the client’s specific site challenges.
• Obtain expertise in designer best practices to ensure highest quality and highest performance in turf infill systems.
