Constructed wetlands can be used as artificial wastewater treatment systems. There are many design factors which affect the effluent quality from a Vegetated Submerged Bed constructed wetland. This 2-hour interactive online course covers the consideration of some of these factors that can significantly reduce the effluent variation. It also provides a brief summary of expected wetland treatment performance, describes issues that are important in the design and layout of a Vegetated Submerged Bed wetland, and includes a design example. Additional Red Vector courses are available on other topics related to constructed wetlands. This course is based on guidance documents published by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Upon completion of the course, you will:
Understand the potential value of wetland plants in Vegetated Submerged Bed system and understand how these plants impact the removal of nutrients and metals.
Understand the mechanisms by which BOD, TSS and nitrogen in various types of effluents are removed in a Vegetated Submerged Bed.
Understand the hydrology of a Vegetated Submerged Bed wetland, including precipitation, and evapotranspiration impacts, water level estimation and hydraulic retention time.
Understand the design considerations for a Vegetated Submerged Bed wetland, including media size, slopes, and piping configurations.
Understand the advantages of a Vegetated Submerged Bed wetland compared to a free water surface wetland
