Conceptualize gardens using a variety of drawing techniques and develop a deeper understanding of design theory while becoming increasingly comfortable with drawing and presentation skills. Delve deeper into design creativity, detailed garden features, and more advanced graphics by solidifying concepts presented in previous courses.
This course will take place over the course of 10 sessions.
Week 1: Course Introduction & The Design Process
Class introductions, instructor and student expectations, required equipment.
Lecture : Overview of the elements and principles of design
Successful Garden design
Read a survey, home work: become familiar with provided site plan learn elements of design
Week 2: Grading/ Site analysis
Elements quiz Understanding the graphic vocabulary . Introduction to contours and stormwater, and grading . Site analysis-, verify survey, inventory the site. Class will read and evaluate an existing conditions survey and prepare a site analysis. Graphic techniques for site analysis slope formula
Home work: grading problem section
Week 3: Site analysis review & Grading
Review site analysis. Grading review sections, landforms, length learn contour rules and change of grade formulas, Practice all three formulas
Week 4: Programming Preparation of Functional Diagram-Concept Diagram Understanding goals and developing design criteria. Programming requirements.
Students will explore and develop concepts for the locations of the desired improvements. Organization of space and movement, definition of relationships with respect to the program will be emphasized. Compositional principles will be stressed; form, scale, proportion etc. Homework concept diagram
Week 5: Review Functional Diagram- Concept Diagram Develop Schematic Design Plans
Define forms of Concept diagram into Schematic design –styles. Organization of space and movement, grading, definition of relationships with respect to the program requirements, design elements and principles will be emphasized . Schematic design
Week 6: Schematic Design review plans –different styles , mindful of scale, massing, geometry, materials-planting concepts. Intro to Design Development, landscape structures
Week 7:Schematic Design Alternate plans –different styles , mindful of scale, massing, geometry, materials-planting concepts. Sections Elevations
Introduction to color theory
Week 9: Design Development -Planting Design
Intro to Design Development, landscape structures Planting concepts, specifics and plans.
Week 10: Design Development to Final Design: Construction Documentation.
Construction Documents possess the components so that a contractor can bid and construct the proposed improvements. Layout plan, Grading, details, sections, planting. Graphic Techniques,
Cost projection- Construction schedule, staging and sequence, site and tree protection
Kennett Square, PA
