SOLAR ELECTRIC (PHOTOVOLTAICS) CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP - 5 Days

Registration Eligibility
Course is limited to 10 students. No electrical background required. This is an entry level course. Some basic math.
Start Date
04/09/2018
End Date

Description
This is a comprehensive course on the design and installation of solar electric systems within residential and light commercial structures.

The course will consist of lectures (about 60%) as well as hands-on labs (also about 40%). You will work with a working PV system, dismantling and re-installing it, troubleshooting and ensuring its proper operation.

This course prepares you to sit for the ETA Photovoltaic Installer (PVI) Level 1. It is the first level of ETA's certifications designed to assess renewable energy professionals. It is also a great first step for those seeking to enter the PV industry, and perhaps later prepare to sit for the NABCEP PV certification program.

On the final day of class you will sit for the ETA examination.

This course is offered in partnership with several not-for-profits. The fee for this one-week course is $970 and includes: Instruction, hands-on labs, textbook starter tool kit, and lab materials, ETA examination, and lunches.

Course Content Includes:
Basic Principles and Concepts of Power,
Basic Principles and Concepts of Photovoltaics,
Photovoltaic System Components,
Standard system configurations,
Site assessment,
Designing a PV system,
Battery Systems,
System Installation,
Paperwork,
Testing and Commissioning the System,
System Maintenance and Troubleshooting

About the Instructor:
Jay Warmke is the author of a number of textbooks on renewable energy, including Green Technology: Principles and Practices (Marcraft), Solar Photovoltaic Installer Certification Guide (Marcraft), Wind Turbine Installer Certification Guide (Marcraft), When the Biomass Hits the Wind Turbine (BRS Media), Understanding Photovoltaics: A Study Guide for Solar Electric Certification Programs(BRS Media), and many more. Jay also served as National Chairman: SkillsUSA Sustainable Solutions Contest, Vice President: Green Energy Ohio, Chairman and Committee Member: Electronic Technician's Association Renewable Energy Committee, as well as an ETA Board Member. He also teaches renewable energy at Zane State University, and the Train-the-Trainer program for Marcraft. Jay was also named the 2013 ETA Educator of the Year.

Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to determine to proper system configuration based on the needs of the client, size the array based on daily load requirements, size the battery bank (if required), and select the proper components for any given situation.

The student will understand the ampacity limitations of wire and will design the wiring system in compliance with the National Electrical Code to ensure that it meets the minimum safety requirements.

The student will become familiar with the various codes, regulations and standards associated with the design and installation of PV systems within the United States.

The student will gain an appreciation of the added risks to the building and to first responders when a fire consumes a building where a PV system has been installed and how to design and install a system that seeks to minimize those risks.

The student will conduct a site analysis for a potential system, determining available sunlight, shading issues, appropriate orientation, mounting options, location of balance of systems and assessing any legal or environmental hazards present at the site.

The student will become familiar with legal and system support paperwork associated with designing and commissioning a PV system.

The student will be able to determine the best system configuration given the needs of the client, and select components that will best meet those needs.
