Description
Spring wildflowers are thrilling
to observe in nature, and gardeners often wish to recapture that enchantment
in their home gardens.

Plants in this class were selected by the knowledgeable staff at Longwood Gardens for their garden adaptability and availability as nursery propagated plants, this course will present information on identification and cultivation of many herbaceous perennials and woody plants, native to our area.

Students will gain valuable tips on purchasing, site selection, planting, maintenance,
and companion plants, as well. You will take guided plant walks at Longwood Gardens.

Learning Outcomes
Plant identification, culture, and landscape use will be discussed through plant walks and lectures.

This course will introduce students to the identification, culture and landscape characteristics of herbaceous perennials and woody plants.

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. Identify required plants by sight (from cut specimens in or out of bloom).

2. Describe the plants’ cultural requirements and landscape characteristics.

3. Know how to use the plant in the designed garden and the surrounding landscape.

4. Know where to look for further information.
