Description
Klaus Philipsen, FAIA, is an architect, urban designer and architectural writer specializing in urban architecture, adaptive reuse, preservation and transportation work. He is President of ArchPlan Inc,. past chairman of the Baltimore Design Center, member of the AIA National Regional and Urban Design Committee and president of NeighborSpace Baltimore County, an urban land trust. He is also a co-founder of the 1000 Friends of Maryland, a statewide smart growth group. He has recently published, Baltimore: Reinventing an Industrial Legacy City, a book about the post-industrial city and Baltimore after the unrest. Drawing on material from his book, Klaus will speak about the relationship between landscape/open space and buildings, the importance of a sound relationship between the two, and how we can look to the past for lessons on creating a better future.

At the end of this program, participants will know:

• The way our decisions about transportation determine the connections and barriers people encounter in their daily lives – and so how easy or hard it can be for people to get where they need and want to go.
• Viable strategies for population growth and community-driven investments in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
• The importance of aligning efforts and requiring inclusion as we work on sustainable comebacks from past problems.
