Description
The closure of the Suffolk Downs property, a former horse racing track on a 150 acre site that straddles the neighborhoods of East Boston and Revere, provides an opportunity to reimagine a large parcel that is accessible by public transit. Visions for a property such as this can build on principles for development that were established through community dialogue. The panel will investigate how this design opportunity can catalyze sympathetic development in the surrounding neighborhoods, as well as explore how environmental sustainability and economic development can be mutually supportive endeavors. This session will compare three alternative visions for the former Suffolk Downs site with differing programmatic and spatial organizations, all of which anticipate the effects of sea-level rise and the increased frequency of storm events. The work is the product of a three day charrette hosted at BSA Space in March 2016 and included local urban design, landscape and planning firms.
