Description
Principals from three Boston landscape architecture firms will present new projects through the lens of trends in placemaking, with a focus on public urban spaces. We ask and answer such questions as how do programming and design work together in an era of ever more crowded cities? In some cases, programming is envisioned and developed before or in concert with the design. How does this impact our urban and suburban places? Meanwhile, groups like the Boston Art Commission urge that a park's design and artwork influence and inform one another. Thus, how does a new city park integrate major public artwork along with the recreation needs of disparate city groups? We also discuss the opportunities and challenges of flexible or transformable site design in the urban realm, including pop-up parks and temporary structures. And in terms of process, how designers interact with the public is changing. While landscape architects still do sticker charts and community meetings, we also now do online surveys, crowd-sourcing, and social media to engage with a larger audience. Join us for a lively discussion with the experts.
