Invasive Plants Session:
After a tour of some of the facilities in the Agricultural Village, a presentation of some of the common invasive plants that plague many urban landscapes with some methods of control and removal by the Penn State Extension Service in Philadelphia. The session will help attendees to identify plants and to review the most effective methods of control.

Awbury Arboretum: Awbury Arboretum is an active, urban arboretum park that is located within the Awbury Historic District in Germantown, PA East of Washington Lane, the arboretum buildings and grounds are open to the public, free of charge as a public park and arboretum, continuing as an urban oasis for close to 100 years. The arboretum continues its mission to provide educational programs, with an emphasis on nature through programs and events.

Awbury Agricultural Village: West of Washington Lane, the arboretum’s Agricultural Center actively interacts with local, regional and state organizations and institutions including Awbury Community Garden Club, Mt Airy USA CDC, Green Sanctuary Earth Institute of PA, Penn State Extension, College of Agricultural Science, The Philadelphia Orchard Project, Tookany/Tacony Frankford Watershed Partnership, Inc., The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and Weaver’s Way Co-op (for the co-op farm).

Many other local organizations are active at Awbury, including local neighborhood organizations. Event attendees will have an opportunity to tour some of these areas, including the Weaver's Way Cooperative Farm.

Learning Outcomes
1. Participants will be provided with a pictorial list of invasive plant species commonly found in Philadelphia urban landscapes.

2. Various methods of control of these plants will be discussed with participants. Not all methods are appropriate for every plant; pros and cons of methods will be discussed.

3. Participants will review the strategy for grounds restoration through discussion of plantings, and features on the arboretum grounds. The benefits of urban green space within Germantown will be discussed.

4. Issues of culture, community relations, and partnerships in stewardship of large urban green spaces will be examined for Awbury Arboretum.

5. Health Safety and Welfare (HSW) aspects of the restoration and maintenance efforts of the arboretum will be examined for accessibility, personal safety on the grounds and access to the grounds plus related issues. Stormwater infrastructure systems, use of additional native plantings and site materials will be included for sustainable design issues.
