Description
Outdoor workshops teach dry stone walling by having participants rebuild a section of historic field wall. The outdoor classroom provides the setting for practicing proper dry stone walling methods in a real life environment. Workshops typically have one certified instructor per eight participants. Each participant usually builds a 4ft long section of wall in a shared working environment. Participants with higher skill levels have the opportunity to work on wall ends and other technical features. The material is mixed and is a real world selection of large and small stones. Material management (sorting) is a key element to the workshop.

The workshop begins with a brief verbal and visual introduction covering safety, basic terminology, and methods. Restoration of the wall begins with dismantling an existing historic wall that is in need of repair. The material is sorted and managed for maximum value. The goal for the first day is to then rebuild the wall up to the throughstones (half the height of the wall).

Day two continues with additional verbal and visual instruction. The wall construction continues to the completed restored height, and the site is tidied up. The age old techniques of splitting stones with feather and wedges is demonstrated as time allows, as is a visit to The Stone Trust Center.

The 2 day format allows participants plenty of opportunities to ask questions about their own projects and concerns.

Goals for the workshop include:
-Safe construction practices
-Understanding walling terminology
-Basic knowledge of correct building methods and techniques
-Ability to identify and manage material for maximum value
-Ability to identify properly built walls

After attending a workshop, participants will have the knowledge to build their own dry stone walls in a safe and structurally sound manner. The workshop also helps train participants to identify correct walling methods and techniques in all dry stone walls. Outdoor workshops are typically offered every spring and fall.
